Istituted in 1999 by the Municipality, Province, Jewish Community, and the Institute for Cultural Heritage, with the purpose of preserving and enhancing the Jewish cultural heritage in Bologna and Emilia-Romagna, the museum is located in Palazzo Pannolini, a historic building situated inside the former ghetto. The visit itinerary is divided into three areas: on the ground floor are the permanent exhibition section and the one dedicated to temporary activities; on the first floor is set up the museum’s documentation center. The exhibition layout, accompanied by multimedia tools and illustrative and educational apparatus, addresses the theme of Jewish identity, explained through key points via the history and culture of the Bologna community, relationships with the university, commercial and conventional credit relations, customs, traditions, festivals, rituals. Two rooms are dedicated to the stay of Jews in Bologna and other cities of Emilia and Romagna. In the documentation center, bibliographic sources and the “databases” connected to the museum and various institutes of the telematic network can be consulted. Among the many cultural initiatives of the museum, Hebrew language courses, both ancient and modern, are noteworthy.
