Born from an idea of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Foligno, the Center represents the culmination of a widespread and growing attention of the city of Foligno towards contemporary artistic research started in the Sixties with important exhibitions, conferences, frequent contacts with leading figures of Italian and international art, and an authoritative collection. Building on this historical basis, the Center has gathered and updated the widespread cultural demand coming from the city and aims to preserve and develop it by giving it concrete dynamic reality. It is located in the historic center on the ruins of a building that was first the milk plant and then a post office. The museum architecture of the Center originates from an idea by Alviani in collaboration with architect Zamatti, later realized by architect Partenzi. The architectural complex consists of a parallelepiped clad in corten steel, giving the exterior volumes the classic rust color of the material. Devoid of windows, it extends over three floors and receives light from a central skylight placed on pillars that mark the interior volumetry. The design is characterized by its simplicity and rigor. Light and space are the protagonists; the building is situated between the medieval apse of the Church of San Francesco and the Art Nouveau constructions of Via del Campanile, creating, in the very historic center, a harmonious impact that unites the ancient with the new in an inspiring contrast. The exhibition rooms are arranged on two floors. The ground floor spaces are intended for exhibitions and as a meeting place for cultural events, screenings, and conferences.
