It has self-proclaimed itself the “mountain city,” due to the impressive crown of Alpine peaks that mark its tourist and landscape fortunes: the Patscherkofel (2247 meters), the Nordkette and the Bergisel with the ski jumping hill, designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid.

The heart of the old town and the city’s symbol is the Goldenes Dachl, the Golden Roof, which shines over a picturesque arrangement of arcades, narrow streets, and late medieval buildings. A very pleasant stroll is along Maria-Theresien-Strasse with the Triumphal Arch, the St. Anne’s Column, and the modern shopping gallery at the Town Hall.

Also not to be missed are the Cathedral of St. Jacob, the Hofburg, residence of the Habsburgs, the Hofkirche with the tomb of Maximilian I, the nearby Folk Art Museum, and the Ferdinandeum with its precious art collections. In the Ambras Castle, an important collection of ancient weapons is displayed.
