The Forest of San Francesco in Assisi is a splendid example of Italian rural landscape spanning 64 hectares with over 800 years of history, a true inner journey to discover the message of perfect harmony between Man and Creation that Saint Francis taught the world. Visitors can walk the narrow path starting from the Basilica of San Francesco and passing through the Selva di San Francesco (owned by the Papal Basilica – Sacred Convent of San Francesco d’Assisi), crossing wooded grounds, cultivated fields, clearings, and olive groves. Upon reaching the valley floor, visitors can explore the remains of a microcosm inhabited between the 13th and 14th centuries by Benedictine nuns, which includes a church, a mill, the ruins of a hospital and a monastery, and further on, an ancient tower-factory from which one can admire the “Third Paradise,” an extraordinary Land Art work by Michelangelo Pistoletto.
Since 2008, the area has been owned by FAI, which is overseeing its restoration and ensuring public access.
