Il Bosco di San Francesco di Assisi is a splendid example of Italian rural landscape covering 64 hectares and over 800 years of history, a true inner journey to discover the message of perfect harmony between Man and Creation that Saint Francis taught the world. Visitors can follow the narrow path that, starting from the Basilica of Saint Francis and passing through the Forest of Saint Francis (owned by the Papal Basilica – Sacred Convent of Saint Francis of Assisi), crosses wooded lands and cultivated fields, clearings and olive groves. Upon reaching the valley floor, one can discover the remains of a microcosm inhabited, between the 13th and 14th centuries, by Benedictine nuns that includes a church, a mill, the remains of a hospital and a monastery and, further on, an ancient tower-factory from which it is possible to admire the “Third Paradise,” an extraordinary Land Art work by Michelangelo Pistoletto.
Since 2008, the area has been owned by FAI, which is overseeing its restoration and ensuring its enjoyment.
