East Anglia Guide, Travel Information

It is the region northeast of London, defined by endless countryside and landscapes that served as the backdrop for John Constable’s paintings, the master landscape artist, born here in 1776 and who lived much of his life here, immortalizing rivers and barges, mills and rural scenes.

Stops not to be missed include Suffolk, with the town of Dedham, caressed by the River Stour, where the tower of the St. Mary’s Church rises and where pleasant boat trips can be taken; Flatford Mill, the old mill owned by Constable’s father, where the British National Trust organizes guided tours.

For birdwatching enthusiasts, there are also the nearby Broads, a wetland area shaped by ponds, canals, reeds, and picturesque windmills (well-preserved is that of Cley-next-the-Sea) to explore by houseboat, canoe, or small sailing boats. A visit to Cambridge and Norwich is unmissable, where their respective cathedrals dominate, adorned with spectacular spires; to the charming wool villages, the ancient wool towns, like Lavenham, where the large Gothic church and delightful 14th-century half-timbered houses stand out; to the splendid Norman castle of Hedingham and the elegant manor of Blickling Hall, north of Norfolk.
