The gallery was not originally created as a war shelter during World War II, but it is believed to have been part of a complex series of underground paths still existing today, with similar size and excavation features, spread along the entire northern side of the city, from the Buoncammino bastions to the area of the former market in via Pola. These were probably built by the Piedmontese, outside the walls, around the 1700s for military purposes: possibly as escape routes or countermining tunnels.
