The gallery did not originate as a wartime shelter during the Second World War, but is believed to have been part of an intricate series of underground paths still existing, with similar dimensions and excavation characteristics, distributed along the entire northern side of the city, from the bastions of Buoncammino to the area of the former market of Via Pola, and which were probably built by the Piedmontese, outside the walls, around 1700 for military purposes: perhaps as escape routes or countermine galleries.
