The gallery was not built as a wartime shelter during the Second World War, but it is believed to have been part of an elaborate series of underground passages still existing, with similar dimensions and excavation characteristics, spread along the entire northern side of the city, from the bastions of Buoncammino to the area of the former market of via Pola, and which were probably created by the Piedmontese, outside the walls, around 1700 for military purposes: perhaps as escape routes or counter-mine galleries.
