The museum is located in Assisi within the Benedictine abbey complex of San Pietro, included inside the historic center surrounded by 14th-century walls. Nearby, the homonymous gate opens. From the green terraced square, it is possible to admire a suggestive panorama of the Umbrian Valley.
The church of San Pietro represents a high example of Umbrian Romanesque architecture. Since 2002, the museum has been housed in the rooms of the ancient cellars of the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro, founded in the 10th century on then extra-urban land and from the 14th century included within the city walls. The visit route includes the crypt of San Vittorino, bishop of Assisi in the 3rd century AD, the reliquary chapel, the sarcophagus, the city gate of the Roman walls, the well of the martyrs, companions of San Vittorino, and the 13th-century underground passage that connected the abbey to the Hospital of the Poor built in 1250.
Among the works, the Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints Vittorino and Pietro, a 15th-century triptych by Matteo da Gualdo, and the collection inspired by the theme of Saint Francis and the Nativity in contemporary art, with works, among others, by Dalì, Sassu, Balla, Funi, and Fazzini.
