The Colosso Collection, preserved in Ugento inside the Colosso Palace, is one of the few historical collections in the Puglia region, formed with materials found in Ugento and its territory in the 19th century. The collection, started by Baron Adolfo Colosso, “a passionate scholar of local history,” is remembered by local writers as always existing on the ground floor of the eponymous Palace, “jealously guarded by his sons Luigi and Massimo Colosso.” The artifacts, 794 in total, date broadly from the 6th century BC to the early medieval period. Added to these are specimens from the modern era such as armors and weapons, cannonballs, etc. The enhancement project of the collection within the stables of Palazzo Colosso represents a significant initiative for the public enjoyment of the collection, whose formation dates back to the mid-19th century, a period when collecting was crucial for preserving top-quality specimens in our region, also playing an important role in the formation of many museums in Puglia.
