Built in the 1st century AD by the will of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, the Colosseum, so-called from a colossal statue that once stood nearby, hosted, until the end of antiquity, highly popular spectacles such as hunts and gladiatorial combats. The building was, and still remains today, a spectacle in itself. It is, in fact, the largest amphitheatre not only in the city of Rome but also in the world, capable of offering stunning scenic effects as well as services for spectators.
A symbol of the splendor of the empire, the Flavian Amphitheatre has changed its appearance and function over the centuries, serving as a structured yet open space for the Roman community. Today, the Colosseum is a monument to itself and to the works of human ingenuity that survive time, presenting itself still as a welcoming and dynamic structure, visitable on two levels, offering a broad overview of the internal spaces, as well as brief and evocative glimpses of the city from the external arches. It also hosts temporary exhibitions related to the timeless themes of antiquity and its relationship with contemporary times, as well as modern performances.
This legacy of events and experiences has made the Flavian Amphitheatre a place that is new every day, meaningful for everyone and able to tell each visitor a Story.
