Erected in the 1st century AD by the will of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, the Colosseum, named after a colossal statue that stood nearby, hosted, until the end of antiquity, shows of great popular appeal, such as hunts and gladiatorial combats. The building was, and still is today, a spectacle in itself. It is in fact the largest amphitheater not only in the city of Rome but also in the world, capable of offering surprising stage sets, as well as services for spectators.
A symbol of the empire’s grandeur, the Flavian Amphitheater has changed its face and function over the centuries, offering itself as a structured but open space for the Roman community. Today the Colosseum is a monument to itself and to the works of human ingenuity that survive through time and still presents itself as a welcoming and dynamic structure, visitable on two levels that offer a broad overview of the internal spaces, but also brief and suggestive glimpses of the city from the outer arches. It also hosts temporary exhibitions related to the ever-relevant themes of the ancient world and its relationship with modernity, as well as modern shows.
This heritage of events and experiences has made the Flavian Amphitheater a place that is new every day, significant for everyone and capable of telling each person a History.
