The theatre is located within the historic center of Norcia, just a few steps from Corso Sertorio, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The theatre was built in 1876 based on the design by Domenico Mollajoli from Perugia and consisted of a horseshoe-shaped hall overlooking three tiers of boxes and a loggia. The inauguration took place on August 15, 1876, with Giuseppe Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera; to cover the expenses, the municipal administration decided to take a loan of 15,000 lire. The curtain was created by the Venetian G. Zasso and depicted Quintus Sertorius in a battle in Africa. The building underwent restorations in 1950, but only two years later it was destroyed by a fire in which the curtain was also lost. After extensive restorations, completed in 1995, the theatre came back to life and is fully functional. At the Norcia Municipal Historical Archive, it is possible to consult important documents, plans, and drawings related to the different construction phases of the theatre.
