The Museum is located in Colfiorito, a small mountain village in the municipality of Foligno, situated along an important ancient crossroads that connected Umbria, Sabina, and the Adriatic coast.
The visit is an opportunity to learn about the cultural development dynamics of this part of the Apennine Umbria, inhabited by humans since prehistoric times and permanently settled from the archaic age by the Umbrian people of the Plestini. The visit is complemented by the Natural Park of Colfiorito and its dedicated museum, located nearby.
It displays artifacts from excavations mainly carried out in the Colfiorito area and its plateaus starting from the 1960s. It is dedicated to the Plestini, a population of Umbrian origin mostly attested here during the most mature phase of their development (7th-5th century BC). The route is organized into thematic sections, where, besides illustrative panels and multimedia stations, there are also reconstructions of some find contexts.
On the ground floor is the lapidary collection, made up of artifacts from the area of the Roman city and the Plestini territory: basins, frames, and columns, as well as inscriptions. The first floor is entirely dedicated to the pre-Roman necropolis of Colfiorito, used from the 9th to the 3rd century BC, exhibiting grave goods and two life-sized reconstructed tombs. The second floor illustrates the settlements and sanctuaries, particularly the hillfort of Monte Orve and the sanctuary of the goddess Cupra, from which come four bronze tablets with inscriptions naming the deity as “mother of the Plestini.” The path ends with the section dedicated to the urban organization of Plestia and the rural settlements that arose in the Plateau area.
