The Museum was established in 2003 to complement the initiative of the Archaeology School Workshop and intends to be an expression of time: the perspective it offers extends to ancient epochs, spans centuries, and reaches the present through a museum representation of the space where the remains of the ancient settlement with houses, streets, fortifications, but also quarries, vegetation, specchie, dolines, casedde—typical dry stone constructions of Salento—constitute places to pause and walk. The landscape, the built environment, and the archaeological findings are considered a three-dimensional palimpsest upon which all human and natural activities have left traces to highlight and convey as knowledge to the public. Access to the park is through the “Balcony on History,” an artificial terrace 10 meters high from which one can grasp the richness of the landscape components embedded in the territory’s horizontality, marking the discontinuity between the modern and ancient settlements. The area is fully served by a system of pedestrian and cycling paths, complemented by furnishing elements such as trash bins, benches, lecterns, and signage islands.
