Starting from the port of Cagliari and crossing the ancient Marina district, marked by narrow and winding alleys typical of fishing villages, you can easily reach the upper town on foot, called Castello, decorated with perfectly preserved bastions and guarded by the Pisan Towers, built in the early 1300s.
Inside the walls nestle the 13th-century Cathedral, the Viceroy Palace, the Cammino Nuovo promenade (the highest point in the city), the Amphitheater, and the Museum Citadel.
Another historic district is Stampace, which annually hosts on May 1st the colorful celebrations in honor of Saint Efisio who, in 1656, saved the city from the plague. During the festivities, you can see a parade of the most representative costumes from the participating towns, and the traccas, festively decorated ox-drawn carts displaying the most authentic local and Sardinian crafts products.
Also of interest are the Botanical Garden and the Roman Villa of Tigellio, and absolutely unmissable are, finally, the seafront and the Poetto Beach, 12 km of fine white sand washed by crystal-clear sea, a usual meeting place for locals and tourists during the warm season.
