Parting from the port of Cagliari and crossing the ancient Marina district, marked by narrow and winding streets typical of fishing villages, you can easily reach the upper city on foot, called Castello, adorned with perfectly preserved bastions and guarded by the Pisan Towers, built in the early 1300s.
Inside the walls nestle the twelfth-century Cathedral, the Viceroy Palace, the promenade of the Cammino Nuovo (the highest point of the city), the Amphitheater, and the Citadel of Museums.
Another historic district is Stampace, the setting, every year on May 1st, of the colorful celebrations in honor of Saint Efisio, who saved the city from the plague in 1656. During the celebrations, there is a parade of the most representative costumes from participating countries, and of the traccas, festively decorated carts pulled by oxen, within which the most genuine products of the territory and Sardinian craftsmanship are displayed.
Also interesting are the Botanical Garden and the Roman Villa of Tigellio, and absolutely unmissable are, finally, the promenade and the Poetto beach, 12 km of fine white sand lapped by crystal-clear sea, a usual meeting place for locals and tourists during the summer season.
