Starting from the port of Cagliari and crossing the ancient Marina district, marked by narrow and winding alleys typical of fishing villages, you can easily reach the upper city on foot, called Castello, adorned with perfectly preserved bastions and guarded by the Pisan Towers, built in the early 1300s.
Inside the walls are nestled the 13th-century Cathedral, the Viceregio Palace, the promenade of Cammino Nuovo (the highest point of the city), the Amphitheater, and the Citadel of Museums.
Another historic district is Stampace, the setting every year on May 1st for the colorful celebrations in honor of Saint Efisio who, in 1656, saved the city from the plague. During the celebrations, there is a parade of the most representative costumes of the participating towns, and of the traccas, festively decorated carts pulled by oxen, inside which the most genuine local and Sardinian craft products are displayed.
Also interesting are the Botanical Garden and the Roman Villa of Tigellio, and absolutely unmissable are, finally, the seafront and the Poetto beach, 12 km of white fine sand washed by crystal-clear sea, a usual meeting place for residents of Cagliari and tourists during the beautiful season.
