It was organized for educational purposes in 1771 on the grounds of Palazzo Paradiso, home of the Ferrara University. Moved in 1919 to a plot adjacent to Palazzo Schifanoia and then returned to the original location in 1925, it was definitively relocated in 1963 to the Institute of Botany of the University and arranged here according to a systematic order. It currently includes about seventeen hundred outdoor cultivated plants grouped by families, in separate flower beds or large greenhouses; particularly valuable are the collections of succulent plants and the collections of orchids and medicinal plants.
