Bolzano, the Renon Cable Car

Getting around Bolzano is easy also thanks to the Renon cable car. A unique system of its kind, because the technology used in high-altitude and ski lifts has been adapted to metropolitan needs, making the cable car absolutely accessible to everyone, including seniors and mothers with strollers.

This, essentially, is the small-great revolution of a system that, in just a few minutes, can transport 210 people from the city center to the Renon Plateau, at 1400 meters altitude; a fantastic place where the air is fresh and the view over the Dolomites is priceless. Beyond the technical features, the new cable car boasts impressive numbers: 4560 meters in length for 950 meters of elevation gain; 6 cabins each holding 35 people; a 12-minute ride per trip with a total capacity of 550 people per hour. Numerous safety devices are also present: double carrying rope; stabilizing carriers for the traction cable; 26 cameras. It is also the world’s first automatic cable car equipped with rescue vehicles. Inside the elegant and sleek valley station, designed by Bolzano architect Luca Zangirolami, a bar and an information point have been set up, and in the annexed building there is an underground parking lot for 130 cars.
The new system will also operate into the late evening (from August 1st, on summer weekends, until 11 PM), allowing passengers to enjoy a suggestive night view over the Bolzano basin or the fiery sunset over the Dolomite peaks. The new cable car adds to two other existing and perfectly functioning systems: the funicular to San Genesio and the one to the Colle.
Little gems that help make Bolzano an ideal town, recognized as Alpine City 2009 for its excellent climatic and environmental conditions, which in the coming years will allow it to produce ever smaller amounts of carbon dioxide to be naturally processed within the urban area.
