Established in 1974, the National Library of Potenza began its activity in 1980 as a branch of the Vittorio Emanuele III National Library of Naples. It became independent in 1984. The National Library of Potenza is tasked with acquiring, collecting, and preserving Italian and foreign published works; maintaining, expanding, and enhancing its historical collections; documenting its holdings, providing bibliographic information, ensuring the circulation of documents, and conducting promotional activities. It specializes in performing university library functions, coordinating its services and acquisitions with the University of Basilicata.
