Istituted in 1974, the National Library of Potenza began its activities in 1980 as a detached section of the National Library Vittorio Emanuele III of Naples. It became autonomous in 1984. The National Library of Potenza is tasked with acquiring, collecting, and preserving Italian and foreign editorial production; conserving, increasing, and valorizing its historical collections; documenting its holdings; providing bibliographic information; ensuring the circulation of documents; and carrying out promotional activities. It is specialized in performing university library functions by coordinating its roles with the University of Basilicata in terms of services and acquisitions.
