Metaponto, from the end of the 7th century BC, was home to one of the most important Greek colonies in southern Italy. The Museum presents the reconstruction of the archaeological framework of the Metaponto territory, from Prehistory to the late antique period, and is divided into various sections illustrating: • the initial forms of settlement by the Enotri-Choni during the Middle Bronze Age and Iron Age; • the arrival of the Greeks from Achaia (region of the Peloponnese) during the 7th century BC, • the formation of the colony with the occupation of the territory and the development of the city, • the transformations of the Italic centers in the hinterland between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, • the period of the Roman conquest and the gradual abandonment of Metaponto.
