For nearly sixty years, it was the home of the famous American art critic and historian Bernard Berenson who, together with his wife Mary, profoundly transformed it according to his taste and aesthetic ideals.

Upon Berenson’s death in 1959, Villa I Tatti, along with the entire estate, was donated by the founder’s will to the university where he had studied, Harvard, becoming from 1961 the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies.

Villa I Tatti can be visited through a route that includes the most significant rooms and the garden designed and created for Berenson by the English architect Cecil Pinsent, an important example in the history of twentieth-century gardens inspired by the Renaissance.
