Annually, the Austrian National Tourist Office publishes and distributes handy and useful brochures with maps, reviewing all campsites on a regional basis, with addresses, phone numbers, and the full range of services. To obtain them from Italy, you can contact the number 840 99 99 18 or write to vacanze@austria.info. Locally, these brochures are available at tourist offices, automobile clubs, or the headquarters of camper associations listed below.
Campers in Austria, The Matter of Vignette
For campers in Austria, as with cars, a Vignette or carnet de passage is required, a sticker to be affixed to the windshield that grants the right to drive on motorways and highways. It can be purchased at border service stations, the corresponding automobile clubs or Austrian ones, post offices, and tobacco shops. For caravans, no such sticker is necessary.
Campsites in Austria
Although numerous, well distributed territorially, and generally offering a wide range of services, campsites in Vienna or camping sites in Innsbruck and, more generally, Austrian campsites are not subject to official classification (no stars or otherwise); therefore, it is good practice before departure to call, write, or consult websites, the vast majority of which have detailed profiles. Almost all campsites in Austria offer discounts for members of sector associations holding the International Camping Card. Besides being convenient bases for exploring a territory rich in attractions, Austrian campsites generally pay special attention to different types of guests (families, disabled, small groups), providing targeted benefits and services such as discounted rates for children or the absence of architectural barriers. Several campsites in Austria, thanks to their location in pristine landscapes, by lakes, at the edges of woods and forests, on the slopes of scenic Alpine peaks, or due to proximity to bike paths and ski lifts, are small paradises for sports enthusiasts and outdoor lovers.
Campsites Innsbruck
Just 5 km from Innsbruck’s historic center in Tyrol, we recommend the Camping Innsbruck-Kranebitten (tel. 0043 (0) 512-284180, daily rates from 20.10 euros), set amid a dense forest with trails branching out in all directions. The campsite, spread over 30,000 square meters with 120 comfortable pitches, pays particular attention to children, who have a large and well-equipped playground, and mountain lovers, offering free guided trips and excursions.
Campsites Carinthia
In Hermagor, Carinthia, a village just 40 km from the Italian border, there is the Naturpark Schluga Seecamping (tel. 0043- (0) 4282-2051, daily rates from 24.40 euros), nestled in the largest ski area of the region and therefore open practically all year round. In winter, during the Christmas holidays, it offers advantageous rates and conditions, including free ski bus service to and from lifts or cross-country trails.
Near Bad Gastein, an evergreen ski and spa resort in Salzburg, lies the Pub Gastein (tel. 0043- (0) 6434-2178, daily rates from 16.30 euros), also open year-round, equipped with modern and comfortable facilities, ideal for winter sports enthusiasts.
Campsites Vienna
In the first belt around Vienna, just minutes from the center, there are the Camping Neue Donau, near the “Donauinsel”, the island on the Danube, one of the favorite recreational spots of Viennese people (tel. 0043-1-202 4010, daily rates from 25 euros) and Camping Wien West, on the edge of the forest region (tel. 0043-1-914 2314; daily rates from 20.50 euros), a very convenient base for excursions to Schonbrunn Castle and the Lainz Nature Reserve. Both offer advanced services, easy access to bike paths and public transport to the city center, and, at certain times of the year, offer special packages and particularly advantageous conditions.
