The Museum is housed in Palazzo Mocenigo, a monumental 16th-century building with frescoed ceilings, built on part of the Castle walls, the remains of which are adjacent to the Museum and incorporated into a public garden. In its numerous rooms, the museum illustrates all aspects of the civilization—developed during the 1st millennium BC—of the ancient Veneti, who had ‘Ateste’ as one of their most important and flourishing centers. Among the artifacts, the embossed bronze vessels stand out, among which the most famous is the ‘Benvenuti situla,’ decorated with figurative scenes; the rich funerary equipment; the votive tablets, inscribed styles, and alphabetical tablets from the sanctuary of the goddess Reitia. Of particular interest is the sarcophagus of Nerca Trostiaia, an Etruscan lady married to a notable from Ateste, with an exceptional set of gold jewelry and bronze objects.
The Roman colony founded by Augustus offers beautiful mosaic floors, fine frescoes, and rich funerary equipment.
