L’archaeological area represents the first nucleus of the Archaeological Park of ancient Abella and encloses the only monument currently visitable of the Roman city. The amphitheater, whose depiction appears on the side of a limestone statue base from the Antonine age now kept in the square in front of the Ducal Palace in the historic center of Avella, was built in the 1st century BC in the south-eastern sector of the ancient city, in an area previously already occupied by residential structures from the Samnite period. The monument, in reticulated work, was constructed against the city walls and supported, in the South-Western sector, by substructures intended to hold the media and summa cavea, the latter not preserved.
