L’Antiquarium Turritano, built in the early 1970s and opened to the public in 1984, is located in the archaeological area of Turris Libisonis, the Roman city on which the modern city of Porto Torres was built. This colony boasted the only port in the northwest of Sardinia that had established direct relations with the ancient port of Ostia. The colony developed around the port and along the final stretch of the Riu Mannu, where the bridge, built in the early 1st century AD, is preserved, an exceptional engineering work. From the windows of the upper floor of the Antiquarium, you can enjoy the view of the archaeological site, which preserves important remains of the ancient urban quarters from the early and mid-imperial period (1st century BC – 4th century AD). The materials on display – mostly dating from the 1st-3rd centuries AD – come from excavations in this area and attest to lively relations with all the regions of the central and western Mediterranean basin and the Aegean. The exhibition is divided into two sections: the first concerning statuary and architectural sculpture of the cult buildings, the second relating to everyday life materials found in the baths, in the tabernae and other private buildings and in the necropolises. Numerous panels illustrate the location and main data of the numerous excavations carried out in the city and surroundings, while a large plan inserts the excavation areas into the current urban situation. Inside the Antiquarium is included the heated environment of a bath.
