Designed by architect Evangelista Menga at the behest of Alfonso Castriota, it was completed in 1540 by incorporating the Angevin keep.
One of the largest fortresses in Apulia, it has a quadrangular layout with four lance-shaped bastions at its corners. Huge connecting galleries run in the inner courtyard linking the bastions; to the left is the Pinelli-Pignatelli porticoed palace.
Notable is the portal in Catalan-Durazzesco style; the Chapel of St. Mark, entirely frescoed by the Mannerist painter Gianserio Strafella, and inside the 16th-century residential rooms, the remains of the chapel with 15th-century frescoes uncovered during the restoration work.
