Established in 1884 in the municipal premises of the Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro to house the numerous artifacts from city excavations, the Museum soon became a key reference point for local archaeology. The first location quickly proved inadequate, so the Provincial Administration decided to reclaim the spaces left by the old Hospital adjacent to the Cathedral to serve as the museum’s new home. During the works, interesting discoveries were made underground. The new museum opened to the public in 1958, and in addition to the civic collection, it gathered the many antiquities uncovered during construction work in the historic center and the towns of the Province. Meanwhile, as office spaces became available, the museum was able to find new rooms and exhibition spaces. The so-called Knights Templar arcade, completed with a modern imitation section (1954), serves as the entrance. The new venue, inaugurated in early 2009, is laid out through a visit path that, from the outer portico, unfolds over two floors, leading visitors to discover the civilizations that have succeeded one another in occupying the territory, from prehistory to the Roman period.
