The route of the Ancient Port of Classe, in Ravenna, developed over an area of about 10,000 square meters, presents the places daily frequented by those who worked in the warehouses or arrived by sea docking at the port, immersing visitors within the archaeological excavation.
The journey begins at the Visitor Center, which houses a multimedia room where the image of a merchant from the time, virtually reproduced, introduces the naturalistic, geological, historical, and archaeological aspects of the territory under examination, along with images and videos of Ravenna’s most important monuments and historical reconstructions of the site.
The visit continues by moving inside the archaeological area, which features a paved road on the sides of which a series of warehouses opened, of which today the foundations are preserved, used in ancient times for loading/unloading goods.
Along the route are screen-printed perspective plates that propose the reconstruction in elevation of the warehouses and architectural elements no longer present. The graphic reproductions overlap the surrounding panorama, blending and restoring the view of the complex as it must have been in the 5th-6th century, offering visitors an all-round immersive experience.
The route of the Ancient Port of Classe also includes a bridge-walkway, which connected the two areas of the port channel: the neighborhood on the island to the commercial district adjacent to the main road. Some viewpoints from the belvederes allow “reading” the site also from other points of view, providing a different vision of the archaeological remains.
