The Civic Museum’s headquarters, currently being set up, is located at Villa Comunale Roberto Bassi Rathgeb. This villa’s original core dates back to the 16th century with significant 18th-century renovations, featuring rooms with frescoes from the early 17th century. Noteworthy is the oratory, which is a replica of the Holy House of Loreto.
The Civic Museum was established in the early 1980s to publicly exhibit the collection donated to the Municipality of Abano Terme by Roberto Bassi Rathgeb, a Bergamo scholar and collector, consisting mainly of paintings and furnishings. The Museum houses over 500 “pieces” including paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture, utensils, weapons, and archaeological finds reflecting the collector’s taste. Currently, the exhibition venues at the Montirone complex are active.
The Civic Art Gallery at Montirone hosts a selection of works from the Roberto Bassi Rathgeb Collection owned by the Municipality of Abano Terme. The displayed paintings are from the Lombard-Venetian area and range from the 16th to the 20th century. Among the most important works are: “Self-Portrait as a Beggar” by Giacomo Antonio Ceruti called Il Pitocchetto; “Portrait of Federico Martinengo” by Alessandro Bonvicino known as Moretto da Brescia; “The Old Mill” by Alessandro Magnasco called Il Lissandrino.
The Contemporary Art Gallery at Montirone hosts temporary exhibitions organized in collaboration with private parties. The City Administration, also thanks to a significant contribution from the Veneto Region, intends to develop the Museum and in the coming years will make Villa Bassi Rathgeb a prestigious museum venue, where, alongside a selection of the Collection, important temporary exhibitions will be held.
