Il Museo della Basilica Cattedrale di Pontecorvo has been enriched with a large quantity of sacred objects whose artistic value was priceless. Unfortunately, the bombing of the Second World War and continuous thefts have greatly depleted this immense wealth, rightly defined as the “Treasure of San Bartolomeo.” A treasure cannot remain hidden but must be seen by everyone because it is a good for all. Therefore, the archpriest Mons. Luigi Casatelli decided to exhibit what remained in a museum to be created in the crypt of the cathedral. After careful consideration and with the advice of Mons. Vincenzo Tavernese, president of the Diocesan Office for Cultural Heritage, the museum was set up during the year 1998. On January 6, 1999, the diocesan bishop Mons. Luca Brandolini inaugurated it during the course of the solemn Epiphany Liturgy. Descending the first flight of stairs you find a canonical lavabo (122x65x38) in stone with the cathedral’s coat of arms and two water-spouting mask heads, the work of an unknown local stonemason of the 17th century.
