The Museum of the Cathedral Basilica of Pontecorvo has been enriched with a large quantity of sacred objects whose artistic value was priceless. Unfortunately, the bombing during World War II and continuous thefts have greatly depleted this immense wealth, rightly called the “Treasure of Saint Bartholomew.” A treasure cannot remain hidden but must be seen by everyone, because it belongs to all. Therefore, the archpriest Mons. Luigi Casatelli decided to display what was left in a museum to be created in the cathedral’s crypt. After careful consideration and with the consultancy of Mons. Vincenzo Tavernese, president of the Diocesan Office for Cultural Heritage, the museum was set up in 1998. On January 6, 1999, the diocesan bishop Mons. Luca Brandolini inaugurated it during the solemn Epiphany Liturgy. Going down the first flight of stairs, there is a canonical stone lavabo (122x65x38) with the cathedral’s coat of arms and two water-spouting mask heads, the work of an unknown local sculptor from the 17th century.
