At the arrivals counters, an entry sheet is handed out, indicating how long it is possible to stay in the country, usually for a maximum of 90 days.

Those arriving from Europe are not required to have vaccination certificates, unless coming from areas contaminated by yellow fever. Antimalarial prophylaxis is highly recommended for those visiting Kruger National Park, the wildlife reserves of KuaZulu-Natal, the regions of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and other risk areas, where it is advisable to equip oneself with a good repellent for flies and mosquitoes; wear long sleeves and trousers in the evening, closed shoes, and avoid using perfumes and aftershaves.

It is wise to pack, before leaving, medicines to counter diarrhea and intestinal problems; avoid drinking water from natural sources and streams, swimming in watercourses, lakes, and artificial basins, even if they look inviting. Tap water in metropolitan areas is potable and thoroughly controlled; however, some extra caution is needed in rural and more isolated areas, preferring, when in doubt, bottled mineral water, even for brushing teeth. The same precaution applies to ice in drinks.

Finally, it is important to remember that HIV virus is unfortunately very widespread in South Africa, and it is important not to neglect all those precautions useful to prevent the risk of contagion.
