Dal mese di luglio 2014 la Biblioteca ha sede all’interno del complesso monumentale della Ss. Annunziata che all’origine ospitava il “Vecchio Ospedale di Piazza Fiume”.
The important restoration and repurposing of the structure managed by MiBACT, following an agreement with the local Asl, has provided the Library with prestigious, technologically equipped premises.
The library holds about 200,000 volumes. Its historic core includes about 1500 manuscripts, 71 incunabula, 3500 editions from the sixteenth century, 4600 editions from the seventeenth century. The origin of the library dates back to the bequest that Alessio Fontana, an officer of the Imperial Chancellery of Charles V, made in 1558 for the foundation of the College. Acquired in 1632 by the University, the book collection was progressively increased. The acquisition of the Condaghe di S. Pietro di Silki (12th-14th centuries), an important source for the study and history of the Sardinian language, dates back to the late nineteenth century.
