Since July 2014, the Library has been housed within the monumental complex of Ss. Annunziata, which originally hosted the “Old Hospital of Piazza Fiume”.
The important restoration and repurposing of the structure, overseen by MiBACT, following an agreement with the local ASL, has given the Library prestigious spaces equipped with modern technology.
The library holds approximately 200,000 volumes. Its historical core includes about 1,500 manuscripts, 71 incunabula, 3,500 editions from the 16th century, and 4,600 editions from the 17th century. The origin of the library dates back to the legacy left by Alessio Fontana, an official of the Imperial Chancellery of Charles V, who in 1558 dedicated it to the foundation of the College. Acquired in 1632 by the University, the book collection was progressively expanded. The acquisition at the end of the 19th century of the Condaghe of S. Pietro di Silki (12th-14th centuries) is an important source for the study and history of the Sardinian language.
