Landing at Marsa Matrouh International Airport, we can admire beaches so enchanting as to be compared to those belonging to the Caribbean paradise. The whiteness and softness of the sand bathed by a splendid Mediterranean Sea, in fact, offer a spectacle for the eyes and a true pleasure for the body.
Although the hotel area has developed recently, the beauty of the Marsa Matrouh coastline is by no means a modern affair, so much so that the place is the subject of a rather widespread legend linking it to Cleopatra. According to tradition, in fact, the Egyptian queen – together with her beloved Mark Antony – was used to bathing in these places.
The Cleopatra beach, located precisely on the opposite side of the Marsa Matrouh lagoon, is characterized (besides its whiteness) by the so-called Cleopatra’s bath and the Sphinx. The first is a large rock carved by water inside which there is a natural pool where, it is said, the Egyptian queen loved to relax. The second, instead, is a rock recalling the shape of the famous Sphinx of Giza. In these places, moreover, the remains of one of the royal palaces have been found, which seems to have had an underground passage connecting it directly to the beach, perhaps to allow romantic night swims.
