Landing at Marsa Matrouh International Airport, we can admire beaches so enchanting that they can be compared to those belonging to the Caribbean paradise. The whiteness and softness of the sand washed by a splendid Mediterranean Sea offer a feast for the eyes and a true pleasure for the body.
Although the hotel area has developed quite recently, the beauty of the Marsa Matrouh coastline is by no means a modern matter, so much so that the place is the subject of a widely spread legend linking it to Cleopatra. According to tradition, the Egyptian queen – together with her beloved Mark Antony – used to bathe in these waters.
The Cleopatra beach, located precisely on the opposite side of the lagoon of Marsa Matrouh, is characterized (besides its whiteness) by the so-called Cleopatra’s bath and the Sphinx. The first is a large rock hollowed out by water, inside of which there is a natural pool where, it is said, the Egyptian queen loved to relax. The second is instead a rock formation shaped reminiscent of the famous Sphinx of Giza. In these places, moreover, remains of one of the royal palaces have been found, which seems to have had an underground passage directly connecting it to the beach, perhaps to allow romantic night swims.
