Hamburg is one of the most beautiful German cities. Famous for its port, the largest in Germany and second in Europe, it has many attractions to offer tourists who are about to visit it. We have created a guide that can be useful for organizing your trip to Hamburg: what to see and what to visit.

What to see in Hamburg: places of interest

In Hamburg the things to see are really numerous and several days would be needed to visit it all at its best. However, we want to suggest some of the most important places that you absolutely cannot miss even if you only have a weekend in Hamburg.

Hamburg City Hall

The Hamburg City Hall: is one of the few eccentric monuments, from an architectural point of view, in Hamburg. It is characterized by a mix of styles: baroque, gothic and neo-Renaissance. The façade is as long as 111 meters, and in the middle stands a clock tower 112 meters high. The building houses the Hamburg Senate and is located in Rathausmarkt square, entirely pedestrianized.

Speicherstadt

Its literal meaning is “city of warehouses”. It is precisely in this area, in fact, that you can observe all the warehouses of the Port of Hamburg (the most important port in Germany and one of the main ones in all of Europe). This neighborhood, built over time, has become the largest warehouse area in the world.

What to do in Hamburg

The Hamburger Dom Festival

It is called Hamburger Dom (cathedral) the great popular fair held in Hamburg three times a year (in spring, summer, and winter). The unusual name comes from the St. Mary’s Cathedral where already in the 11th century street vendors, artisans, acrobats, and charlatans used to take shelter from the cold and bad weather. In 1334, however, the archbishop ordered them to leave the church and the colorful circus of wonders moved outdoors to the adjacent meadow called Heiliggeistfeld. Even today, the most spectacular festival in northern Germany takes place here. Loved by Hamburgers and visitors alike, the Hamburger Dom is a gigantic carousel of antique and modern rides, toy stalls, food stands, and amusement park attractions stretching nearly three kilometers and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. In the surroundings of Hamburg it is also possible to surf.
