Detta also Rocca del Sasso for its position at the apex of the spur overlooking the town, it is among the largest and best-preserved Malatesta fortresses that have seen the overlapping and integration of various architectures dating from the 12th to the 16th century. Here emerged Mastin Vecchio, forefather of the Malatesta family, remembered by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Visitors can see the Great Hall of the fortress, the various rooms that usually host exhibitions and setups, the keep with its panoramic terrace, the dungeons, the large 13th-century cistern still perfectly functioning, the rampart, the guardhouse, and the clock tower. It currently houses a remarkable collection of medieval weapons: in addition to the model of the first firearm to appear in the West, there are several muzzle-loading weapons, 15th-century armor, arquebuses, and a powerful 15th-century bombard.
