Detta also Rocca del Sasso for its position at the apex of the spur overlooking the town, is among the largest and best preserved Malatesta fortresses that has seen the overlapping and integration of various architectures dating from the 12th to the 16th century. Here the Mastin Vecchio, forefather of the Malatesta, remembered by Dante in the Divine Comedy, established himself. Of the fortress, the Great Hall, the various rooms that usually host exhibitions and setups, the Mastio with its panoramic terrace, the dungeons, the large 13th-century cistern still perfectly functioning, the escarpment, the guardhouse, and the clock tower are visitable. It currently houses a remarkable collection of medieval weapons: besides the model of the first firearm that appeared in the West, it features some muzzle-loading weapons, 15th-century armors, arquebuses, and a powerful 15th-century bombard.
