Il Museo, located inside the Frederick II castle of Melfi, presents important archaeological documentation found in the Vulture-Melfese area. From the Archaic age come the funerary goods that yielded refined Daunian ceramics with geometric decoration, bronze armor, precious silver, gold, and amber ornaments as well as bronze vessels of both Greek and Etruscan production. The classical section focuses on extraordinary finds from the 4th-3rd century BC, including red-figure Magna Graecian ceramics and monumental polychrome decorated vases with applied figures, of Canosan production, found in Lavello (ancient Forentum). The Roman phase is documented by an exceptional 2nd-century AD marble sarcophagus with relief decoration, attributable to workshops of Asia Minor, featuring on the lid the “sleeping” deceased and on the side panels Roman gods and heroes framed in niches.
