L’itinerary of Memory and Peace, created within the Monumental Complex of San Bartolomeo, unfolds along a permanent exhibition of photographic panels that trace the entire history with documents and images of the Shoah. The monumental complex of S. Bartolomeo is the fulcrum around which the entire path called “Itinerary of Memory and Peace” revolves. The entire museum route focuses on the temporal story of the Jews; the tearing of war recalls that of the 1980 earthquake and the lithic elements represent the silent witnesses of the “Disappeared City”, which welcomes the visitor at the entrance of the museum, after having followed the itinerary that leads through the alleys of the historic center and the steep climb of S. Bartolomeo. The central walkway of the first floor collects all the documents, in original and/or copy, of the Last Police Chief of Fiume, correspondence with the bishop uncle, the public acts of the internment camp, and the photos. In the Interned Room, the setting of a typical room has been recreated with original furnishings, household items, and period photos. In the Synagogue Room, the setting of a place of worship present in the camp has been recreated. In the Teaching Room, the didactic panels and a central wave tell the history of internment camps in Italy and particularly in that of S. Bartolomeo. In the Shoah Room, a pictorial report of Nazi horror in Europe is being prepared, with the starkness of a reportage, almost in antithesis to the condition of the Jews in the S. Bartolomeo Camp. In the Pencil Room, a pencil testifies to the presence of every single Jew in the camp. The choice is not accidental: the pencil gives the possibility to still write one’s own story, while the registration number tattooed on the bodies of the deportees with indelible ink inevitably marks its end. The Escape Room will conclude the memory path in the place where the internees were made to flee, through the mountains, after the signing of the armistice on September 8, 1943, when it seemed certain that nothing could stop the Nazi fury after the great Italian betrayal. The sign, which was found in the camp at the time, will be displayed inside the room as a permanent testimony to the courage of the camp officials: Jews transferred, Destination unknown. The Woman and Shoah Room, a project carried out by the Liceo – Psychopedagogical “T. Confalonieri” of Campagna. The “Multipurpose Room” will be used for conferences on the topic as well as for cultural meetings. A bookshop will be an effective vehicle for informational and educational material for visitors, while a refreshment point could also be a moment of pause and reflection on the delicate topic treated.
