The Memory and Peace itinerary, created within the San Bartolomeo Monumental Complex, unfolds along a permanent exhibition of photographic panels that retrace the entire history with documents and images of the Shoah. The San Bartolomeo monumental complex is the pivot around which the entire route called “Memory and Peace Itinerary” revolves. The entire museum route focuses on the temporal story of the Jews; the tearing of war echoes that of the 1980 earthquake, and the lithic elements represent the silent witnesses of the “Disappeared City,” which welcomes the visitor at the museum entrance, after having walked the itinerary through the alleys of the historic center and the steep climb of San Bartolomeo. The central ambulatory on the first floor gathers all the documents, original and/or copies of the Last Police Chief of Fiume, correspondence with the uncle bishop, public acts of the internment camp, and photos. In the Internees Room, a typical room setting has been recreated with original furniture, utensils, and period photos. In the Synagogue Room, the setting of a place of worship present in the camp has been recreated. In the Educational Room, didactic panels and a central wave narrate the history of internment camps in Italy, particularly that of San Bartolomeo. In the Shoah Room, a pictorial account of Nazi horror in Europe is being arranged, with the starkness of a report, nearly in contrast to the condition of the Jews in the San Bartolomeo Camp. In the Pencils Room, a pencil testifies to the presence of each individual Jew in the camp. The choice is deliberate: the pencil allows writing one’s story, while the tattooed registration number on the deportees’ bodies in indelible ink irrevocably marks its end. The Escape Room will conclude the memory route in the place where internees were made to escape through the mountains after the armistice signed on September 8, 1943, when it seemed certain that nothing could stop the Nazi fury following the great betrayal by the Italians. The sign, which at the time was found in the camp, will be displayed within the room as a lasting testimony to the courage of the camp’s officers: Transferred Jews, Destination unknown. The Women and Shoah Room, a project realized by the “T. Confalonieri” Psycho-Pedagogical High School of Campagna. The “Multipurpose Room” will serve for conferences on the topic as well as cultural meetings. A bookshop will be an effective channel for informational and educational material for visitors, while a refreshment point can also be a pause and reflection moment on the delicate subject treated.
