L’itinerary of Memory and Peace, created within the San Bartolomeo Monumental Complex, unfolds along a permanent exhibition of photographic panels that retrace the entire history with documents and images of the Shoah. The San Bartolomeo monumental complex is the fulcrum around which the entire path called “Itinerary of Memory and Peace” revolves. The entire museum route focuses on the temporal experience of the Jews; the tearing of war recalls that of the 1980 earthquake and the lithic elements represent the mute witnesses of the “Disappeared City,” which welcomes the visitor at the entrance of the museum, after they have followed the itinerary that leads them through the alleys of the historic center and the steep climb of S. Bartolomeo. The central walkway of the first floor collects all the documents, original and/or copies of the Last Chief of Police of Fiume, the correspondence with the bishop uncle, the public acts of the internment camp, the photos. In the Interned Room, the setting of a typical room with the original furnishings, utensils, and period photos has been recreated. In the Synagogue Room, the setting of a place of worship present in the camp has been recreated. In the Educational Room, the didactic panels and a central wave tell the history of the internment camps in Italy and particularly in the one of S. Bartolomeo. In the Shoah Room, an image narrative of the Nazi horror in Europe is being set up, with the harshness of a reportage, almost in contrast to the condition of the Jews in the S. Bartolomeo Camp. In the Pencils Room, a pencil testifies to the presence of every single Jew in the camp. The choice is not casual: the pencil gives the possibility to still write one’s own story, while the matriculation number tattooed on the deportees’ body with indelible ink irrevocably marks its end. The Escape Room will conclude the memory path in the place where the internees were made to flee through the mountains after the signing of the armistice on September 8, 1943, when it seemed certain that nothing could stop the Nazi fury after the great betrayal of the Italians. The sign, which at the time was found in the camp, will stand inside the room as a permanent testimony to the courage of the camp leaders: Jews transferred, Destination unknown. The Women and Shoah Room, a project carried out by the “T.Confalonieri” Psycho-pedagogical High School of Campagna. The “Multipurpose Room” will be used for conferences on the topic but also for cultural meetings. A bookshop will be an effective vehicle of informational and educational material for visitors, while a refreshment point could also be a moment of pause and reflection on the delicate subject treated.
