Dominating the river and the town is a powerful sandstone castle, which inside is not much, since it was largely rebuilt in the 19th century. More interesting, however, is the Civic Museum, which tells the ancient traditions related to silversmithing, leather tanning, violin and bagpipe making, and preserves a 7th-century painted stone depicting a wolf. To the north of the city lies the Black Isle peninsula, shaped by two spectacular fjords, such as Inverness Firth and Cromarty Firth, dotted with woods and farms and immersed in absolute tranquility. Pleasant boat trips are organized at the port of Cromarty to see porpoises, a species of large dolphins, grey and common seals.
