Scotland: Inverness Guide

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands, with a turbulent and bloody history, where Shakespeare set Macbeth. It boasts a strategic position on the Ness river and can be a convenient starting point to visit the most famous locations in the region: Fort William, the slopes of Ben Nevis, Loch Ness.

Overlooking the river and the town is a massive sandstone castle, which inside is not much to see, as it was largely rebuilt in the 19th century. More interesting, however, is the Civic Museum, which tells the ancient traditions related to silver craftsmanship, leather tanning, violin and bagpipe making, and houses a 7th-century Pictish stone depicting a wolf. North of the city lies the Black Isle peninsula, shaped by two spectacular fjords, such as the Inverness Firth and the Cromarty Firth, dotted with woods and farms, immersed in absolute tranquility. At Cromarty harbor, pleasant boat trips are organized to see porpoises, a kind of large dolphin, gray and common seals.
