The visit to the Castellana Caves – open all year round – is conducted with the help of tour guides.
The route develops at an average depth of 70 meters along two itineraries: the first 1 kilometer long and lasting 50 minutes, the other 3 kilometers long and lasting almost 2 hours.
The temperature of the underground environments, constant throughout the year, is about 18 °C, while the humidity rate is above 90%.
La Grave, the first and largest cavern of the underground system, is the only environment naturally connected to the outside: 100 meters long, 50 meters wide, and 60 meters deep.
The section of the Caves accessible to the public consists of environments very diverse in shape and size. Stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns, precious crystals shine everywhere. The names of the environments crossed are the product of the imagination of the first explorers: the She-Wolf, the Monuments, the Owl, the Little Madonna, the Altar, the Precipice, the Desert Corridor, the Upside-Down Column, the Red Corridor, the Dome.
Finally, the last and most beautiful cavern of the underground system, the White Cave, defined by the richness and whiteness of the alabaster, the most brilliant in the world.
